His mother and her boyfriend, John Conroy Jr., started arguing Tuesday night at their Spotsylvania, Va., home. When it escalated into a physical altercation, the watching teen responded by finding his mother’s semi-automatic gun and using it against Conroy.
He shot the 37-year-old multiple times, killing him.
Captain Jeffery Pearce told reporters, “Preliminary investigation is showing that Mr. Conroy physically attacked her.”
There were no records of previous domestic abuse, and the teen, his mother and Conroy lived together for several years before the incident.
The mother was treated for non life-threatening injures, and the teen is being held Rappahannock Regional Juvenile Detention Center until his court hearing.
An attorney explained that all homicides in Virginia are “presumed to be murder in the second degree,” but the charge can be increased, reduced or dropped, pending further investigation.
